How to Read a COA for Hemp Gummies

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a lab report that shows what is in a batch of product. For hemp gummies, it is the best way to check the THC content and whether the batch passed safety tests. Here is how to read one, section by section.

At the top you should find:

  • The lab’s name and, ideally, its ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.
  • The product name and batch or lot number. This must match the number printed on your package.
  • The test date. Recent is better.

2. The cannabinoid (potency) panel

This table lists each cannabinoid and how much was found. Values are usually shown as a percentage, as mg/g, and sometimes as mg per unit.

  • Delta 9 THC should be at or below 0.3% by dry weight for a hemp product.
  • Delta 8 THC and other cannabinoids should roughly match the label claim.
  • ND means “not detected”. LOQ is the smallest amount the lab can measure reliably.

To check the per-gummy amount, multiply the mg/g value by the weight of one gummy in grams.

3. Safety panels

A full COA also includes tests for contaminants. Each should read PASS:

  • Residual solvents left over from extraction
  • Heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury
  • Pesticides
  • Microbials such as mold, yeast, E. coli and salmonella

Some COAs only include the potency panel. That is less complete, so look for full-panel reports where possible.

Red flags to watch for

  • The batch number does not match your package.
  • The report is several years old or has no date.
  • You cannot find the lab online.
  • Delta 9 THC is above 0.3% by dry weight.
  • The PDF looks edited, blurry or has missing pages.
